Equity Foundation Endorses APPROVE REF. 71 Campaign in Washington State

PORTLAND- Equity Foundation has voted to endorse the APPROVE REF. 71 campaign. Equity Foundation is a community foundation that supports organizations in Oregon and Southwest Washington that promote the dignity and worth of all people—including lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) individuals. Approval of Referendum 71 will uphold Washington’s domestic partnership law that gives basic rights to LGBT families living and working in our community. Failure of Referendum 71 would strip away those rights.

“We are proud to have Equity Foundation’s endorsement as they join a coalition of well over 250 organizations and some of the region's biggest employers like Microsoft and Boeing fighting to keep the state's domestic partnership law, that provides many important protections to lesbian and gay couples. This is going to be a close race that will come down to the wire. We need money and volunteer time to make sure the LGBT community and our allies all vote to APPROVE REF. 71 and we thank Equity Foundation for helping to get the word out,” said Josh Friedes, Campaign Manager for the APPROVE REF. 71 Campaign.

Washington’s domestic partnership laws allow same-sex couples to be able to take unpaid leave to care for a critically ill loved one without being fired, to be able to cover a partner in family health insurance, and ensure that hard-earned pension and death benefits protect children when a parent dies.

Kevin Easton, Equity Foundation Executive Director, said “An attempt to strip away rights from any community is shameful. Fair-minded Washingtonians and Oregonians need to do what ever they can to make sure this referendum passes. Please consider making a direct contribution at http://www.approvereferendum71.org/ or volunteering at a phone bank.”

Basic Rights Oregon (BRO) is setting up phone banks in Portland to call Washington voters and remind them to mail in their ballot marked APPROVE REF. 71. Phone banks will be at the BRO offices on:
• Monday, October 26th, 6-9pm
• Tuesday, October 27th, 6-9pm
• Wednesday, October 28th, 6-9pm
• Thursday, October 29th, 6-9pm

If you can’t give a contribution, please sign up to volunteer some time. Sign up at: http://www.ow.ly/t42c.

Equity Foundation Request Proposals for the 2010 General Cycle Grants

Equity Foundation requests proposals for their 2010 General Grants Cycle. All qualified organizations need to apply by March 15, 2010. If you have further questions, please contact Grants Director, Joey Kerns at joeyk@equityfoundation.org or (503) 231-5759 x203.

Kevin Easton, Equity Foundation, Executive Director, said, “Our volunteer grant review committees consist of community members from all over the state representing many diverse communities. This ensures that our process pays attention to the needs of both rural and urban Oregon and Southwest Washington.”

Twenty years ago, members of Oregon’s lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender community who were concerned about the ignorance, fear, and divisiveness in society, created Equity Foundation and began to change Oregon. The foundation has five granting programs and, since their inception, they have distributed more than $3 million in college scholarships and grants throughout Oregon and Southwest Washington to programs that work to build communities that embrace the dignity and worth of all people.

Equity Foundation supports efforts in Oregon to request Governor Ted Kulongoski, and other local elected officials, to officially declare November 20, 2009 as Transgender Day of Remembrance.

Allison Cleveland, Executive Director of The Gender Center in Eugene, is leading efforts for this cause. Cleveland said, “Transgender people receive disproportionately more discrimination and violence against them than any other minority population. Equity Foundation is an important partner in ending discrimination and violence against transgender people

The text of the proclamation reads as follows:

WHEREAS: Oregon State has a long-standing tradition of upholding the dignity of the individual, supporting legal equality and fair treatment for all citizens, and ensuring that acts of neglect and violence toward any segment of the population will not be tolerated; and
WHEREAS: transgender people, who are often undeservedly maligned and misunderstood, contribute greatly to our state’s rich diversity and prosperity; and
WHEREAS: Transgender Day of Remembrance honors those who have died by homicide at the hand of ignorance and prejudice, while attempting to pursue the American dream of freedom and equality; and
WHEREAS: transgender Oregonians invite all citizens to join them in events throughout the state that serve to unify us and pay tribute to those who can no longer join us;
NOW, THEREFORE:

I, Theodore R. Kulongoski, Governor of the State of Oregon, hereby proclaim November 20, 2009 to be Transgender Day of Remembrance In Oregon and encourage all Oregonians to join in this special observance, and to work toward eliminating discrimination on all levels and to promote tolerance.

Equity Foundation Secures over $7,700 for Outside In

Equity Foundation has secured over $7,700 in grants for Outside In during the most recent fiscal year. The largest grant extended to Outside In was $5,000 from the Blaine Kozak Fund of Equity Foundation.

Kathy Oliver, Executive Director of Outside In, said, “Nationally, 40% of homeless youth identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, or intersex. At Outside In, time and time again, we have seen that coming out is often the reason youth end up homeless with nowhere to turn. Having funders like Equity Foundation gives queer youth the message that they have worth. A sense of self worth is directly related to an ability to believe that they can leave the streets and accomplish their goals.”

“Outside In provides a wonderful variety of services to our low income adults and homeless youth, particularly sexual minorities. They assist with employment, housing and medical outreach resources. Their high level of success over a period of 40 years speaks to their skills and their dedication to an often under served segment of our city. They are a credit to our community and deserve our generous support,” said Donor Advisor Blaine Kozak.

Throughout the past year, Equity Foundation has worked to secure over $7,700 for Outside In through their General Grant Cycle, Donor Advised Funds, and Workplace Giving granting programs. The Blaine Kozak Fund of Equity Foundation is one of over 60 Donor Advised Funds, which offers community members an opportunity to establish a fund within Equity Foundation and have a direct advisory role in awarding foundation grants to nonprofits.

Equity Foundation Awards Grant to HIV Alliance for HIV Testing

As part of their General Granting program Equity Foundation awarded HIV Alliance of Eugene a grant for HIV testing, counseling, and referral to Lane County residents at high-risk for contracting or transmitting HIV.

Diane Lang, Executive Director of HIV Alliance, said, “This Equity Foundation grant allows us to provide HIV counseling, testing and referral services. Currently our testing is only partially funded by government funds. Without the assistance of private funds, we would have to turn away high risk individuals who want to be tested. 75% of new HIV infections are transmitted by the 20% of people living with HIV who do not know their status, so testing is critical in stopping the spread of HIV. Testing is also critical in slowing progression of HIV.”

Due to the current economic conditions, Equity Foundation received an increase of grant applications from around Oregon.

Kevin Easton, Equity Foundation Executive Director said, “Equity Foundation values the work HIV Alliance is doing in Lane County and we are happy to support their work.”

Equity Foundation Awards Capacity Building Grant to Eugene’s Q Center

As part of their General Granting program Equity Foundation awarded Q: A Queer Resource for Social Change, Eugene’s Queer Center, a grant to establish professional and sustainable systems for marketing, public relations, fundraising, and community outreach.

Kori Rodley Irons, Q’s Board President, said “As a small, nonprofit Queer Center working to build a reputation and solidify our position in the community, this support from the Equity Foundation is key. It will help us to focus on spreading the word and show the community that we are a worthwhile resource.”

Due to the current economic conditions, Equity Foundation received an increase of grant applications from around Oregon.

Kevin Easton, Equity Foundation Executive Director said, “Equity Foundation had many worthy organizations apply for funding, but certain ones stood out. It is really important to get the word out about Q: A Queer Resource for Social Change and continue to build up LGBTQ community centers throughout Oregon.”

General Grant Cycle Applications are reviewed by regional volunteer committees throughout Oregon to ensure that proposals are reviewed by members of their local community. Although the annual General Grant Cycle is only one of the five granting programs offered by the foundation, it is the most well known program. General Cycle Grantees are required to align closely with Equity Foundation’s mission and meet other criteria.

Equity Foundation Celebrates Portland Area Pride Festivals with First of Two $500 Grant Give-a-ways to Oregon Non-Profits

PORTLAND, OR—Demonstrating their commitment to fund change and change attitudes, Equity Foundation proudly continued the gay pride spirit in the Portland metro area today by announcing the first winner in their $500 grant give-a-way drawing.

Congratulations to Shane Ulrich of Clackamas, Oregon whose name was drawn from entries collected at Portland metro area gay pride festivals in which Equity Foundation co-sponsored: Latino Gay Pride, Portland Black Pride and Pride Northwest’s Portland Gay Pride. Festival participants were asked to enter the drawing to win $500 for their favorite charity.

Ulrich selected Planned Parenthood Columbia of the Willamette (PPCW) as the recipient of the grant and, as a result of Ulrich winning the drawing, Equity Foundation will provide them with a grant of $500. The mission of PPCW is to provide, promote, and protect access to sexual and reproductive health care. PPCW also received an Equity Foundation General Cycle Grant earlier this year to increase awareness among the Portland lesbian, bisexual and transgender community that annual exams and Pap tests are an essential and affordable element of primary health care.

Ulrich said, “I chose Planned Parenthood not only because I believe in what they do, but more importantly, how they do it. It is because of Planned Parenthood that my fiancé, Veronica, and I have been tested and know that we are sexually safe for each other, and that we can responsibly plan our future and family together. I truly believe that this is an opportunity that can and should be available to everyone, regardless of race, gender, age, or financial situation… I would like to thank Equity Foundation for providing the opportunity to help out a wonderful organization.”

Equity Foundation’s Executive Director, Kevin Easton said “It’s our pleasure to be able to grant these funds to deserving organizations like PPCW. This contest inspires philanthropy and shows the generosity of the sexual and gender minority community. I’m looking forward to doing it again in August after other Pride Festivals around Oregon.”.

Equity Foundation will hold another drawing from the entries collected from the next batch of gay pride festivals that they are co-sponsoring: Bend Pride, Eastern Oregon Pride (Hermiston), Pride Corvallis, Lincoln City and Eugene Pride.

Equity Foundation works to eradicate prejudice towards sexual and gender minorities in Oregon. By working with philanthropic donors and nonprofit partners, Equity Foundation funds change and changes attitudes through grants and scholarship opportunities. Founded in 1989, the Foundation has awarded thousands of grants aimed at grassroots community change initiatives, throughout Oregon. During the last fiscal year, it awarded roughly $330,000 in grants and scholarships.

As part of their General Granting program Equity Foundation awarded Human Dignity Coalition (HDC) in Bend a grant for a program developed to respond to the needs of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) youth and their allies.

Jenni Peskin, HDC Executive Director said, “Since 1992, Human Dignity Coalition has been promoting equality for the LGBTQ and allied community in rural Central Oregon. We promote respect for diversity, give voice to underrepresented groups and respond to the issues that affect them. Having the steadfast support of Equity Foundation allows us to focus on building the movement for progressive social change.”

Due to the current economic conditions, Equity Foundation received an increase of grant applications from around Oregon.

Kevin Easton, Equity Foundation Executive Director said, “Equity Foundation had many worthy organizations apply for funding, but certain ones stood out. HDC’s work in Central Oregon over the years has made it a much more accepting and welcoming place to live for underrepresented communities including the LGBTQ community. I’m happy this grant will help them continue their great work.”

Equity Foundation Awards Higgins Grants to Cascade AIDS Project for Housing Assistance

As part of their General Grant Cycle program, Equity Foundation awarded a Paul D. Higgins Housing Grant to Cascade AIDS Project for housing assistance. The Paul D. Higgins Housing Fund was created through the estate of Paul D. Higgins in 2004 to support housing for people with HIV/AIDS and for supportive services designed to help people with HIV/AIDS maintain their housing and live as independently as possible.

Michael Kaplan, Executive Director at Cascade AIDS Project said, “With the Equity Foundation’s help over the years, Cascade AIDS Project has been able to help thousands of people living with HIV/AIDS find stable housing. For many, having a safe place to live has made all the difference in being able to stick to a medication regimen, resist the risks of street life, and regain the peace of mind they need for healthy, happy lives. We are profoundly grateful for Equity Foundation’s help as we work toward our mission of caring for people with HIV/AIDS.”

Due to the current economic conditions, Equity Foundation received an increase of grant applications from around Oregon.

Kevin Easton, Equity Foundation Executive Director said, “In these economic times, housing costs continue to be disproportionately burdensome on those living with HIV/AIDS. We are confident that Cascade AIDS Project will continue to make good use of Paul D. Higgins Fund dollars to help reduce that burden.”

Equity Foundation Awards Grant to Community Alliance of Lane County for LGBTIQQ Youth Advocacy

As part of their General Granting program Equity Foundation awarded Community Alliance of Lane County (CALC) a grant to keep pressure on the Springfield school district to provide a safe, positive environment for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and questioning (LGBTQ) students, staff, and families.

Tova Stabin, CALC’s Development Director said, “In tough economic times like these, funding is harder to come by while the need for support is even greater. Programs supporting concrete and creative work with LGBTQ youth, including those who are homeless or at risk of homelessness, are essential to all of us. Our Equity Foundation grant will fund our programs for LGBTQ youth—fighting discrimination, planning activities and events, creating artistic and leadership opportunities, creating safe and respectful school and community environments, and bringing together allies. We are thankful for organizations like Equity Foundation that focus their efforts on LGBTQ youth.”

Due to the current economic conditions, Equity Foundation received an increase of grant applications from around Oregon.

Kevin Easton, Equity Foundation Executive Director said, “Equity Foundation had many worthy organizations apply for funding, but certain ones stood out. CALC’s longstanding efforts to create a safe world for LGBTQ youth in Lane County is a good investment.”

Equity Foundation Secures $16,000 in Grants for Oregon Public Broadcasting

Equity Foundation has secured over $16,000 in grants for Oregon Public Broadcasting (OPB) over the past year. Recent economic conditions have made funding sources decrease for many charities and the arts are no exception. Government funding has been greatly slashed for OPB, jeopardizing many important programs like “In the Life” and “Oregon Experience”. Equity Foundation is a community foundation that provides an opportunity for community members to pool their money to create a larger impact.

The bulk of Equity Foundation donors are members of the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender (GLBT) community as well as numerous people from many diverse backgrounds. Funding at the foundation is driven by the community. Among the nearly 200 organizations supported by the foundation, OPB emerged as a major organization for the foundation and its supporters.

Kevin Easton, Equity Foundation’s Executive Director said, “Oregon Public Broadcasting offers important programming that enriches our community. Oregonians need to be aware of our history and common struggles. Programs like ‘In the Life’, which portrays the struggles of the GLBT community, and ‘Oregon Experience’ are necessary to keep our history and common threads in the forefront.”

Throughout the past year, Equity Foundation has worked tirelessly to secure over $16,000 for OPB through their Donor Advised Fund and Workplace Giving granting programs. While these are just two of the five granting programs offered by the foundation, they are, in fact, the largest programs. The Workplace Giving program offers employees in various workplaces the option to give to approved organizations through payroll deductions. Equity Foundation administers these grants for grantees to provide them with funding from pooled smaller donations from around the state.

"On behalf of OPB viewers and listeners everywhere, thank you to Equity Foundation donors for supporting OPB! Your generosity makes everything we do possible. We could not do what we do without you,” said Tara Taylor, OPB Vice President of Marketing & Planning.

PORTLAND , OR— Dawn Holt, Co-Chair of Equity Foundation’s Board of Directors, was appointed to the recently formed Oregon Council on Civil Rights (OCCR) by Labor Commissioner Brad Avakian. Recognizing a need to better address the causes and effects of unlawful discrimination in Oregon, State Labor Commissioner Brad Avakian announced the creation of OCCR. The commission will foster increased collaboration, outreach, education and partnerships between state enforcement efforts, advocacy groups, employers, and citizens.

Holt said, “I’m honored to have been appointed to the Oregon Council on Civil Rights and look forward to serving with such an outstanding group of Oregonians committed to ending discrimination. I am very excited to work on a commission where the leaders and allies of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community have an equal seat at the table.”

The 25 members appointed to the OCCR will work to advise the Commissioner and the state on all matters related to education about and enforcement of civil rights in Oregon. This includes administration of protected class provisions; making recommendations on new and existing civil rights protections and rulemaking to administer civil rights law most effectively; and fostering better enforcement, outreach, and education efforts to aggressively fight unlawful discrimination in Oregon.

The Bureau of Labor and Industries (BOLI) is Oregon’s chief law enforcement agency for protecting people’s civil rights in employment, housing, and public accommodation. BOLI’s Civil Rights Division enforces laws that protect workers from unlawful discrimination, including retaliation when workers report safety violations, use family leave provisions or file for workers’ compensation. The division also protects those who suffer unlawful discrimination when seeking housing or using public facilities such as restaurants, theaters, and stores. Each year, the division fields an average of 30,000 inquiries and investigates over 2,200 cases.

Equity Foundation Awards Grant to Friendly House for GLBT Seniors

PORTLAND , OR— As part of their General Granting program Equity Foundation awarded Friendly House a grant for Elder Resource Alliance to guarantee all gay, lesbian, bi-sexual, transgender, queer and intersex (GLBTQI) seniors are treated with the same dignity and respect as their heterosexual counterparts.

Mya Chamberlin, Program Director for Friendly House Senior Program said, “Over the years, support from Equity Foundation has helped Elder Resource Alliance to enhance the lives of older GLBTQI community members through education, advocacy, and outreach. Equity’s support this year will help us to expand our mission to serve a more frail population of GLBTQI seniors by increasing the number of Friendly Visitor volunteers who assist our GLBTQI seniors and by improving our ability to develop needed resources.”

Due to the current economic conditions, Equity Foundation received an increase of grant applications from around Oregon.

Kevin Easton, Equity Foundation Executive Director said, “Equity Foundation had many worthy organizations apply for funding, but certain ones stood out. The Elder Resource Alliance effort to serve our elder population was one of those proposals worthy of funding.”

The Raving Dove of Hope Award is a natural evolution of this mission, one that will serve as a springboard for discourse in Oregon's high schools about the importance of nondiscrimination. We are enormously grateful to Equity Foundation for helping us launch such a valuable nonfiction essay competition.”

GRANTMAKERS of Oregon and Southwest Washington Helps Deepen Commitment to Diversity: Equity Foundation and other Members of GRANTMAKERS Join Forces to Promote Diversity

Foundations around the country are learning that cultural diversity leads to more effective grantmaking, and GRANTMAKERS of Oregon and Southwest Washington members are no exception. Whether motivated by values of equal access and inclusivity, or by the desire to get out ahead of changing regulations, many regional associations are developing resources to help member funds embrace cultural diversity in their work.

In December, the GRANTMAKERS of Oregon and Southwest Washington Board took an important step in that direction by forming a new committee to focus on diversity and equity. The committee’s role is to identify and promote strategies that will help GRANTMAKERS of Oregon and Southwest Washington build a just and equitable philanthropic community. Suk Rhee of the NW Health Foundation, Kevin Easton of the Equity Foundation and Marjory Hamann of the McKenzie River Gathering are on the committee, and others may be joining soon.

Vic De Luca, President of the Jessie Smith Noyes Foundation, made an effective pitch for expanding staff diversity, increasing funding in communities of color, and becoming more culturally competent in his closing keynote address at the 2008 GRANTMAKERS of Oregon and Southwest Washington Conference. He also explained why their family foundation, which awarded over $2.8 million in grants in 2007, had committed to embracing diversity and challenging institutional and cultural discrimination. For Vic, the reason was simple: “having a diverse board and staff grounds us, making us more accountable to our grantees and their communities.”

Cultural diversity in philanthropy expands when our organizations have the active engagement and leadership of people with different life experiences based on their race, ethnicity, gender, physical ability, sexual orientation, economic status and other factors.

As foundations, we have opportunities to build greater diversity on multiple levels: in our own organizations, in the range of organizations we fund, and as a network of funders.

Meaningful conversations about diversity go beyond asking questions about who’s at the table. They include discussions of who’s getting funded—and who isn’t; about what perspectives we listen to when we invite community members to educate us about funding needs; and about how well we support leaders who are coming from parts of the community that are underrepresented in foundation circles.

In the months ahead, the new committee will be talking with GRANTMAKERS of Oregon and Southwest Washington members to find out what would be most useful for you. If you have ideas or suggestions, feel free to send them on to committee chair Marjory Hamann at marjory@mrgfoundation.org.

Equity Foundation's LGBTQQ Juvenile Justice Project Accepted to Present at the Adolescent Sexuality Conference in Seaside

The Equity Foundation LGBTQQ Juvenile Justice Project is excited to announce that a proposed workshop/panel on LGBTQQ youth in the juvenile justice and related social service agencies was recently accepted for presentation at the Adolescent Sexuality Conference to be held in Seaside Oregon on April 6 and 7, 2009. The Adolescent Sexuality Conference is an annual conference aimed at health professionals and administrators, counselors, social and youth service workers, parents, clergy, teens and community members, and sponsored the Oregon Attorney General’s Sexual Assault Task Force.

The Lambda Legal Defense and Education fund reports that 26% of LGBTQQ youth are forced to leave their families because of conflict with their parents regarding sexual orientation and/or gender identity. Once homeless, these youth commit crimes such as shoplifting, trespassing and prostitution. Arrest often leads to contact with the juvenile justice system and related social service agencies. Thus, LGBTQQ youth enter the juvenile justice system as a direct consequence of the discrimination and lack of support these youth experience because of their sexual orientation and/or gender identity.

The Equity Foundation LGBTQQ Juvenile Justice Project, in an effort to better understand this issue and its impact on the juvenile justice and related social service providers, surveyed 34 agencies in the Portland Metro area. Data was gathered in 3 broad areas: Agency Policies and Procedures in regards in LGBTQQ youth; Training provided by the agency to better ensure staff competency in working with LGBTQQ youth; and Protecting the Safety and Well-being of Transgender youth. The data was presented in a one day Summit conference in Portland on May 30, 2008. Further information was gathered at the Summit from a broad group of stake holders including elected officials, judges, juvenile justice and social service workers and GLBTQQ youth advocates.

The workshop panel will discuss background information in regards to the cycle of homelessness, petty crime and arrest; the information gathered by Equity Foundation, both from the 34 surveyed providers and participants of the May 30 2008 Juvenile Justice Summit; and a review of the 10 Things to Know When Working with GLBTQ Youth created by the Equity Foundation LGBTQQ Juvenile Justice Project for providers and educators working with LGBTQQ youth.

An Open Letter to the LGBT Community and Our Allies:

In any election year, there is a tremendous amount of information to take in and process - this year it has been particularly difficult for those of us who are committed to achieving full equality for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender Americans.

Nothing can take away from the incredible, awe-inspiring election of President-elect Barack Obama, the election of fair-minded majorities in Congress, Oregon, and elsewhere. However, how do we reconcile the painful losses to our community in California, Arizona, Florida, and Arkansas?

Since Measure 36 amended the Oregon constitution in 2004, we have lived with the painful reality that our families are treated differently and are excluded from the dignity and respect that come with marriage. This injustice continues to sting.

But too often we express our pain and disappointment in ways that not only obscure the truth and compromise our core values, but are also counter-productive.

This is happening right now as people divide our country and our community by blaming people of faith, African American voters, rural communities and others for the loss in California.

The truth is that millions of voters took a stand against discrimination. And they did so in numbers greater than we have ever before seen. Eight years ago Californians passed a marriage ban by a 22% margin. This year it was only 4%. While far from a victory, this shift represents historic progress.

These pro-equality voters came from all walks of life -- communities of color, faith leaders, labor and business leaders, Republicans, and Democrats.

And let's be clear: our movement for equality is bigger than one vote, broader than one issue, and stronger than the fear and intolerance that we must overcome.

The truth is that if we want to ensure that all lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender Oregonians experience equality, we must continue to build a broad, inclusive and politically powerful movement. We must change attitudes, including our own. And we must reach fearlessly for the promise of equality, despite temporary setbacks.

We must build bridges, not throw stones. We must be the change we wish to see in the world.

In Oregon, our path to marriage requires that we build a tremendous statewide coalition that will allow us to remove Measure 36 from our Constitution. That won't happen overnight. And we must build power that not only impacts marriage equality, but also addresses the urgent needs of LGBT youth, transgender people, and LGBT people of color.

Now is the time for our community to unite -- to respect our differences and honor our diverse perspectives. It's true that we have to share our anguish over what has been lost. But we also have to share our hope for what lies ahead.

There has been a lot of discussion about various forms of protest and demonstration in the week since the election. This energy to organize wide-scale resistance is exciting and energizing. We applaud those in our community who are stepping up to lead the way. Click Here for more information.

And we call on everyone in our community to move forward together, to speak with one voice, to believe fundamentally in the power of inclusion and to reject the desire to place blame.

Finally, we want to offer some ideas for concrete action. If you believe, as we do, that marriage equality is worth fighting for, then we ask you to make a commitment to take one meaningful action every week and every month until every Oregonian has the freedom to marry the person of their choosing. You can make a difference in your community:

*Get started next week with a community dialogue about the vote in California. In Portland, a number of organizations have joined together to present United & Moving Forward: A Roundtable Discussion on the outcome of Proposition 8." Details below.

*Be sure you know who your state legislator is and let them know how important marriage equality is to you. Write a letter to your local paper calling for marriage equality.

*Pledge a monthly contribution to organizations that support and build our community --whether they are working on the front lines of our work around HIV, legislative issues and creating fair and just policies for all or they are connecting and supporting us as gays, lesbians, bisexuals, transgendered, seniors, children, youth and families.

*Stand up for trans justice and educate yourself about transgender equality - November is Trans Awareness Month. For information and events in Portland click here. For the National Center for Transgender Equality click here.

*Volunteer in your community --join the social justice committee at your place of worship, organize a team for the 2009 Lobby Day, talk about LGBTQ issues, come out to your friends, family, neighbors and colleagues.

Together, we can build a movement for equality for all Oregonians.

    In solidarity,

Jeana Frazzini, Executive Director, Basic Rights Oregon Kendall Clawson, Executive Director, Q Center Kevin Easton, Executive Director, Equity Foundation Michael Kaplan, Executive Director, Cascade AIDS Project Rev. Nathan Meckley, Senior Pastor, Metropolitan Community Church of Portland Favor Ellis, Program Director, SMYRC (Sexual Minority Youth Resource Center) Teri Noble, State Coordinator, PFLAG Oregon State Council David Martinez, Co-Chair, Portland Latino Gay Pride Craig Tyson, Board Chair, Unity Project of Oregon

United & Moving Forward: A Roundtable Discussion on the outcome of Proposition 8

Equity Foundation, Portland Latino Gay Pride, Unity Project of Oregon, Basic Rights Oregon, Q Center, Human Rights Campaign, Metropolitan Community Church, NW Gender Alliance, and Pride Foundation INVITE YOU to United & Moving Forward: A Roundtable Discussion on the outcome of Proposition 8.

The Media has placed much attention on the minority vote and role of other constituencies in this campaign. With divisive language and questionable reporting, the public is jumping to conclusions. We want to bring our community together to discuss what took place in California, share accurate and updated information, and most importantly brainstorm ways we can move forward.

Equity Foundation’s newest board member, Allison Cleveland of Eugene brings an extensive history rich with active participation in the transgender community. She has served on various committees throughout the state, including the Oregon Department of Justice’s Domestic and Sexual Violence Service Victim Fund Committee (ODSVS), the Rural Organizing Project Board and the Social Justice Alliance. Allison has worked intimately with state legislators to pass a multitude of critical laws for the advancement of sexual and gender minority rights. She is also the Founder and Executive Director of the Gender Center, which works to create a safe and accepting society for gender and sexual minorities through outreach, education, supportive resources, and anti-violence advocacy. “I am very excited to work with Equity Foundation and be a part of the process of change and changing attitudes and strengthening community,” Allison stated. She is a noted expert and speaker on gender identity issues around the state which will be valuable to our organization.

VOTE NO ON MEASURE 64 AS IT COULD HURT EQUITY FOUNDATION AND ALL OTHER CHARITABLE ORGANIZATIONS

Equity Foundation is Oregon’s Lesbian, Gay, Bi-sexual, Transgender, Queer (LGBTQ) community foundation and is a fundraising organization that utilizes workplace giving campaigns statewide both in the private and public sectors. Funds that we raise through workplace giving campaigns help the LGBTQ community but also all children, families, seniors, pets, people with disabilities and many other Oregonians in need.

Because many of the nonprofit agencies that receive funding from Equity Foundation advocate on issues that affect the people they serve, if Measure 64 passes, our work and theirs could be considered "political" in the measure’s broad and unclear definition. Therefore, Equity Foundation’s fundraising would be seriously restricted by Measure 64.

Measure 64 could specifically prohibit public employees from making voluntary payroll donations to Equity Foundation in the same way they have for years. Payroll deduction programs are an important revenue source for Equity Foundation. The restriction imposed on public employees by Measure 64 could result in significant funding reductions to us and our grantee non-profits all over Oregon.

Due to the elimination of the payroll deduction option and the high cost of complying with Measure 64, Equity Foundation could have significantly less funding to support the community.

In addition, the additional loss of funding to other charitable organizations that raise money from public employees through workplace giving campaigns could result in the loss of millions of dollars in critically needed social services.

PLEASE VOTE NO ON MEASURE 64 AND KEEP THE PATH OPEN FOR CHARITABLE WORK PLACE GIVING

GRANTEE: Outside In: Gus Van Sant to Host Red Carpet Debut of Milk to Benefit Outside In

Outside In has announced that director Gus Van Sant will host a red carpet debut of his latest film Milk to celebrate their 40th anniversary. Milk tells the story of prominent gay activist and San Francisco city politician Harvey Milk during the years leading up to his assassination in 1978. His life changed history. His courage changed lives.

"Just as Harvey Milk's bravery and sense of hope changed history, Outside In has encouraged and empowered a population that is sometimes overlooked and underestimated," Gus Van Sant said. Starring Sean Penn, Emile Hirsch, Josh Brolin and James Franco, Milk has generated widespread anticipation among fans and film critics.

On November 14, 2008, the Portland Milk debut will occur at the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall in the heart of the downtown cultural district. Red carpet, Hollywood-style search lights, and the historic illuminated marquee will set the scene as film industry celebrities, local civic leaders, and Outside In supporters gather to experience Milk and benefit the organization. Gus Van Sant will deliver personal remarks to the crowd of 2,700 at 8:30 p.m.

The Milk screening will be the fourth premiere Gus Van Sant has hosted to benefit Outside In. "We are thrilled that Mr. Van Sant has aligned the excitement surrounding Milk with our landmark 40th anniversary," said Kathy Oliver, executive director at Outside In. "His gracious on-going support has played a profound role in the success of the services that we provide," Oliver added.

Outside In provides comprehensive services to more than 500 homeless youth per year. Initially, these youth may have emotional walls they have built around themselves to survive. Outside In focuses on their strengths and builds the confidence that is required for them to be able to obtain self-sufficiency. Outside In provides safety off the streets, meals and skilled counselors. An on-site transitional housing program delivers one of the most successful outcomes in the nation. Access to medical and mental health services for 8,000 uninsured people per year, a nationally recognized job training program, a thriving education program and drug and alcohol treatment groups have proven to move youth off the streets.
