Equity Foundation Announces Debra Porta and Pride Northwest winners of the 2010 John Grigsby-Jim Vegher Investment in Dignity Award

Equity Foundation will present Debra Porta and Pride Northwest, the non-profit organization responsible for coordinating the largest Gay Pride festival and parade in Oregon, with the John Grigsby-Jim Vegher Investments in Dignity Award. Pride Northwest exemplifies the criteria of the award by promoting the values and mission of Equity Foundation, reflecting the time, energy, and commitment that John Grigsby and Jim Vegher provided the Foundation during its inception and early years.

Debra Porta, President of Pride Northwest Board of Directors said, “The importance of the Pride festival, in the LGBTQ community and in ourselves as members of that community, is something that the Pride Northwest board takes very seriously. The commitment we have to ensuring the continued strength and future cohesiveness of our community is the fundamental principle that drives all that we do.”

For approximately 40 years, Pride festivities have been occurring in Portland with Pride Northwest at the helm for the past 16 years. The organization has worked to make the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) community and their issues visible in mainstream society by not only coordinating the Pride Parade and Festival in Portland, but also assisting in the education of all people through the development of activities that showcase the history, accomplishments, and talents of the community. Recently, when other large Pride organizations around the country have folded, Pride Northwest has been able to grow and thrive.

“We are very happy to award this to Debra and the Pride Northwest organization and salute the commitment and countless hours the board, staff and all the volunteers have put in over the last 16 years to make Portland’s Pride Festival such a wonderful community event for all to enjoy. This recognition is long overdue,” said Kevin Easton, Executive Director of Equity Foundation.

The award will be presented to Porta and Pride Northwest at Equity Foundation’s “Speakeasy Casino: A Night to get Lucky!” on March 6, 2010 at the Crystal Ballroom. The event will include gaming, prohibition era themes, jazz by Bridgetown Sextet, cocktails, hors d’oeuvres, silent auction, and big prizes for the winners. Tickets, which include food, drink and entertainment are $65 and can be purchased here.

Equity Foundation builds communities that advance the dignity and worth of all people. Equity Foundation Secures over $13,400 in Grants for Oregon Humane Society

Equity Foundation has secured over $13,400 in grants for Oregon Humane Society during the last fiscal year, reflecting the diverse interests of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) community. Although the Oregon Humane Society is not a General Grant Cycle Grantee, the organization was supported through the Donor Advised Fund and Workplace Giving programs, which are two of the five granting programs at the foundation.

King Casey’s Rhythm and Jazz Band will entertain guests at Equity Foundation’s “Speakeasy Casino: A Night to Get Lucky” on March 6, 2010 at the Crystal Ballroom. The band was formed specifically for the Speakeasy Casino and is part of the general revelry of the event. Equity Foundation has decided to be bold and do something different for their fundraiser. No more long speeches and live auctions. The event will include gambling, prohibition era themes, a jazz band, cocktails, hors d’oeuvres, silent auction, and big prizes for the winners. Don't gamble? There will be something for everyone.

Money raised during the Speakeasy Casino will benefit Equity Foundation, which is a local Oregon foundation that promotes the dignity and worth of all people by providing college scholarships and grants to organizations working to end discrimination against gender and sexual minorities as well as other diverse communities in Oregon. Donations to the foundation, therefore, benefit more than just one organization. Donations touch organizations and students throughout the state.

This past year Equity Foundation granted nearly $320,000 to 175 organizations across the state of Oregon. Recent grantees have included Community Alliance of Lane County, Oregon Public Broadcasting, Q Center, Elder Resource Alliance, and many others
