Bunkin’ With You in the Afterlife is a cowgirl musical written by award-winning author, Jody Seay and produced by BroadArts Theatre. From its beginnings as a reading in last year’s Fertile Ground Festival, BroadArts is kickin’ up our delighted collective heels to bring the full musical production to the stage!

Bunkin’ has preview performances scheduled for the Q Center, January 27 and 28th, and the grand opening at the IFCC/ Ethos on Friday, Feb. 3. Bunkin’ continues at the IFCC/ Ethos on Friday and Saturday nights at 8 p.m. through March 10.  In addition, BroadArts is offering our special “Set-less Sunday” shows at In Other Words Bookstore and Community Center, on Sunday nights Feb. 5,12,19,26, and a special International Women’s Day show and party March 4th, all beginning at 7 p.m.  Tickets are available online through the BroadArts website, through Box Office Tickets at www.boxofficetickets.com. Group rates are available and each venue is accessible.

Full of rambunctious fun, the comedy musical play takes square aim on the sometimes touchy subject of religion and spirituality, as well as homosexuality, equality, and women’s rights. The musical features Minnie Rhodes, a lesbian minister, and her Many Roads Ministry, Cowgirls for the Lord, who ride around on horseback in the deep green hills of conservative southern Oregon spreading, and singing, the good news – not of having been saved – but, indeed, of never actually having been lost.

Bunkin’ With You in the Afterlife features Portland star actress and singer Hillarie McKenna as Minnie Rhodes herself, and a cast of extraordinarily talented singing actresses, including Kate Mura, Promise Nunn, Mollie Hart, Jean Hiebert, Sarah DeGrave, and Natalie Jacobs. The onstage CowBand is fronted by singer/ songwriter Renee Muzquiz, with Dan Linn on guitar and Aaron Linn on percussion. Willie (pre-Drammy) award-winning director and Oregon Book Award-winning playwright Melinda E. Pittman directs the show. You’ll hoot and holler at lively, original songs like The Boy I Fell in Love With is a Girl, Saddle Soarin’, The Perfect Girl, Brave Enough, and the cowgirl kickline of the title tune, Bunkin’ With You in the Afterlife.

Statewide celebrity and Bunkin’s playwright, Jody Seay, is the producer of Back Page on Oregon Public Broadcasting, and the author of The Second Coming of Curly Red, a novel about the clash between lesbians and rightwing evangelicals in 1992 rural Oregon. Her second book, a memoir called Dead In a Ditch, Growing Up in Texas and Other Near Death Experiences, released last November by Koho Pono Publishing, is available through Amazon and at local and nationwide bookstores.
