Equity Awards Announced for 2012

PORTLAND-Equity Foundation announces Dr. Tom Barreto as the winner of the David M. Crawford Memorial Award and Dawn Holt as the winner of the Jim Vegher-John Grigsby Investments In Dignity Award.  These awards are presented to individuals that exemplify Equity Foundation’s values and mission.  The winners will be recognized during the Equity Awards Luncheon on January 20, 2012 at the Governor Hotel in Portland.  In addition to the individual awards, the winners of the business Equity Awards will be announced at the luncheon.  Tickets are available at www.equityfoundation.org/awards.

The David M. Crawford Memorial Award is given to individuals that are a champion for social equity in the gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender (GLBT) community and beyond.  Dr. Barreto has served on the Equity Foundation Board of Directors and the Board of Advisors. His involvement as a philanthropist, volunteer, and a leader has made him a champion for social equity.

The award recipient will have promoted the values and mission of Equity Foundation, reflecting the time, energy, and commitment that John Grigsby and Jim Vegher provided the Foundation during its inception and early years. Dawn Holt has committed many hours to Equity Foundation’s mission by serving on the Board of Directors as Vice Chair, Co-Chair, Past Chair, and Secretary while also volunteering during events and serving on the Juvenile Justice Committee, hiring committees, and numerous event planning committees.

Additionally during the luncheon, Equity Awards will be presented to small, medium and large businesses that are exceptional in employment practices and policies benefiting diverse races, religions, mental or physical abilities, and any other minority group. An emphasis will be placed on policies that promote social justice and provide equal opportunity for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender individuals. The nominees for the small business category are: Beth Allen Law; Bridge City Medical; McEwen Gisvold, LLP; and Metropolitan Group.  The nominees for the medium sized business category are: Entercom and Stoel Rives.  The nominees for the large business category are Nike and Portland General Electric.  Each business was nominated by their respective employees.

 The mission of Equity Foundation is to build communities that advance the dignity and worth of all people.  Equity Foundation promotes philanthropy and positive interaction through college scholarships and by granting funds to organizations that work to eradicate prejudice against gender and sexual minorities and people from other diverse communities.
